Bright X - ray source populations in the starburst galaxies NGC 4038 / 4039

چکیده
Assuming a naive star formation history, we construct the synthetic X-ray source populations for comparison with the X-ray luminosity function (XLF) of the interacting galaxies NGC 4038/4039 using a population synthesis code. We have considered highand intermediate-mass X-ray binaries, young rotation-powered pulsars and fallback disc-fed black holes in modelling the bright X-ray sources detected. To examine the effects of the input parameters on the calculated results we produce a series of hybrid models. We find that for typical binary evolution parameters, it is difficult to match the observed XLF shape, and the predicted XLFs seem to be steeper than those of starburst and late type spiral galaxies. We note that the shape of the XLFs depends critically on the existence of XLF break for young populations, which seems to be a popular feature in theoretical population synthesis works. We discuss possible reasons and implications on the discrepancy of the calculated and observational XLFs.

A Comparison of Ultraluminous X - Ray Sources in Ngc 1399 and the Antennae Galaxies ( Ngc 4038 / 4039 )
The temporal and spectral properties of ultraluminous X-ray sources (ULXs, L X > 2 × 10 39 ergs s −1) and bright X-ray sources (L X > 3 × 10 38 ergs s −1) are examined and compared in two extremely different host environments: the old elliptical galaxy NGC 1399 and the young, starforming Antennae galaxies (NGC 4038/4039). ULXs in NGC 1399 show little variability on either long or short time sca...
متن کاملUbiquitous Water Masers in Nearby Star-forming Galaxies
We report the detection of water maser emission from four nearby galaxies hosting ultradense H II (UDHII) regions, He 2-10, the Antennae galaxies (NGC 4038/4039), NGC 4214, and NGC 5253, with the Green Bank Telescope. Our detection rate is 100%, and all of these H2O “kilomasers” (LH2O < 10 L⊙) are located toward regions of known star formation as traced by UDHII regions and bright 24 μm emissio...
متن کاملUv Morphology and Star Formation in the Tidal Tails of Ngc 4038/39
We present GALEX FUV (1530 Å) and NUV (2310 Å) observations of the archetypal merging system NGC 4038/39, “The Antennae”. Both tails are relatively bright in the UV , especially in the vicinity of the Tidal Dwarf Galaxy candidates at the end of the southern tail. The UV light generally falls within the optically delineated tails, although the UV light is considerably more structured, with a rem...
متن کاملNewton observations of the interacting galaxy pairs NGC 7771 / 0 and NGC 2342 / 1
We present XMM-Newton X-ray observations of the interacting galaxy pairs NGC 7771/7770 & NGC 2342/2341. In NGC 7771, for the first time we are able to resolve the X-ray emission into a bright central source (L X ∼ 10 41 erg s −1), plus two bright (L X > 10 40 erg s −1) ultraluminous X-ray sources (ULXs) located either end of the bar. The soft emission of the central source is well-modelled by a...
متن کاملThe Stellar Content of the Southern Tail of Ngc 4038/9 and a Revised Distance
We have used the Hubble Space Telescope and Wide Field Planetary Camera 2 to image the putative tidal dwarf galaxy located at the tip of the Southern tidal tail of NGC 4038/9, the Antennae. We resolve individual stars, and identify two stellar populations. Hundreds of massive stars are present, concentrated into tight OB associations on scales of 200 pc, with ages ranging from 2-100 Myr. An old...
